Re-Classifying History
2005
This series examines the systems and cultural assumptions found in various objects from the collection of San Francisco’s de Young Museum. The larger-than-life marble figures are photographed in their crating systems, which simultaneously accentuate gestures and obscure identities. The packing crates become artworks themselves, and the figures assembled together in this manner suggest new narratives and hybrid interpretations. The photographs of the chairs invert and disorder the iconic structure’s chronological history, both literally and metaphorically, reflecting on the latent meanings inherent in these objects.
