Art & Science: Investigating Matter
1995
Reading about the Human Genome Project, I was fascinated by its intent to determine a “genetic blueprint,” first by mapping chromosomes and then by sequencing the entire gene structure of the human race. I began looking at science, specifically genetic research, as a model of both who we are and who we will become.
-86 DEGREE FREEZERS
These are interior views of -86 degree freezers containing the tissue sample archives from the Human Genome Project. They contain specimens used in research into twelve areas of concern and crisis, including Alcoholism, Alzheimer’s, Bipolar Disorder, Breast Cancer, and HIV.
FOSSIL TYPOLOGY
In the Earth and Planetary Science Department at Washington University I was drawn to the fossil collection as a survey of life's history over millions of years. The resulting nine-part typology is constructed of a compendium of lifeforms including early sea life, plant life, and mammals, spanning the entire evolutionary timeline.
